About the event
The Icon's Journey Marathon (a proud member of Proudly South African) presents to you it's 4th annual multi-sporting event.
The Icon’s Journey Marathon vision was inspired by President Nelson Mandela’s journey of growing up in the rural villages of the former Transkei homeland to becoming a Global Icon.
Gears have shifted greatly as The Icon’s Journey rebrands itself on a new cycling course. Set to commence in the historic coastal town of Port St. Johns, South Africa. The strand, almost dubbed a century, will see a bunch of cyclists from across the globe converging to claim their victory through a terrain of rarity.
Cyclists will be peddling against the 95km apex connecting the two towns: Port St. Johns and Mthatha. The course will usher these icons on a cooling 9km stretch passing through the Isinuka, Mud Caves, and Sulphur Pools. Cutting through the villages of Caguba, Zitchece, and Mgxabakazi a "granny gear" will be an option as the stretch elongates further up to the Tombo village.
There, at a 20km dot, will be a "feed zone" in preparation for yet another intimidation at the Ntsimbini village. Then the course will unwind on a moderate terrain allowing the bunch to regroup. The stretch continues, separating the hills of Mgwenyana and Mlengana. This will be tough but the views and breeze from hidden valleys will be cheering enough to see cyclists through the St. Barnabas Hospital, Ntlaza village (Ntlaza the start of the 35km journey).
52kms on record, they will roll down in anticipation of Libode, 63kms. Finally, you will cross the Mthatha River (87kms) and take on the next and cycle off the rest and tap their cleats at the 95km end point, the Nelson Mandela Museum.
